Witness nature’s intimate encounter. Be mesmerised by the sight of sea turtles lumbering slowly up the white sandy beaches to lay eggs, especially during peak season from May to September. Rantau Abang beach in Terengganu is one of the only six places in the world where giant leatherback turtles come ashore in droves to lay eggs.

In fact, four marine turtles – the Leatherback, Green, Hawksbill, and Olive Ridley turtles have chosen Malaysia to lay their eggs. Known to swim great distances for nesting, these gentle creatures have been dwindling in numbers, with some of them on the brink of extinction.

So to be able to watch them laying eggs is truly a fascinating experience. The turtle eggs from the size of a ping pong to tennis ball has spawned a collecting frenzy, treating them like buried treasure, because of the good prices fetched in the local markets. Waiting for the right moment, female turtles try to sneak ashore without being detected, but since leatherback and green turtles weigh up to 500 and 100 kilogrammes, respectively, their chances are slim. The turtles can grow up to 2.5 metres long.

Besides Rantau Abang, other areas for turtle watching include Turtle Bay on Pangkor Island and Tanjung Jara Beach in Terengganu.  The area’s warm grainy sands and favourable beach slope make nesting easy for the lumbering creatures.

London has overtaken Bangkok as the top destination for international travelers on the MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index, as political unrest in the Southeast Asian city kept visitors away.

Bangkok, while retaining its leading position among Asia-Pacific cities, may draw 16.4 million international overnight visitors this year, an 11 percent decline from 2013, the index showed. London retook the top spot with an 8 percent increase in travelers to 18.7 million. Four other Asian cities -- Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Seoul -- also ranked among the top 10 destinations.

“The prominence of the South East Asian cities on the Index demonstrates the importance that trade and tourism plays in these economies,” Matthew Driver, Southeast Asia president of MasterCard Inc., said in a statement. These cities “have clearly benefited from a deliberate and ongoing investment in travel capacity and infrastructure,” he said.

Bangkok also lost its position as the top Asian city in terms of international visitor spending on the MasterCard index that ranks 132 cities on the basis of total international visitors as well as cross-border spending by them. The Thai capital may see an estimated $13.04 billion in spending this year, behind Singapore at $14.34 billion, it showed.

Bangkok has bounced back before from military coups, a tsunami, financial upheaval, floods and riots.Thailand’s net foreign direct investment inflows were about $11 billion in 2012, trailing only Indonesia and Singapore in the region. The benchmark stock gauge, which fell 10 percent in the final two months of 2013 during street protests against former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, is up 16 percent this year, four times the gain for the MSCI Asia Pacific Index.

NEW DELHI, June 13 ― Malaysia has bagged the Best Family Destination Award at the Lonely Planet Magazine India Travel Awards 2014.

India Tourism Malaysia Director, Manoharan Periasamy said Lonely Planet recommendations were the most sought after by travellers and to be chosen by their readers made the award even more prestigious. 

“It feels great to be honoured with this recognition. We have always promoted Malaysia as a destination that has something for everyone, especially families, who look for a wholesome experience to cater to the likes of every member of the family,” he said after receiving the award at a function held in Mumbai, Maharashtra recently.India Tourism Malaysia Director, Manoharan Periasamy said Lonely Planet recommendations were the most sought after by travellers and to be chosen by their readers made the award even more prestigious.

The Lonely Planet award is a significant achievement for Malaysia, a country that prides itself for being the perfect family destination.

“Be it shopping, adventure, theme parks or even golf, Malaysia is one place where the preferences of every member of the family are taken care of,” he added.

Top 10 Places to Visit in Malaysia for VMY2014 is a list created in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia Year 2014. Langkawi's beautiful GEO Park

Langkawi Island - This is one of the recommended islands to visit in Peninsular Malaysia as the infrastructure is modern yet laid back. Located just above Penang and part of the Kedah state, Langkawi offers beautiful beaches, plenty of resorts ranging from low to high end and even luxury resorts like The Datai and The Four Seasons for all types of travelers. Apart for it being an island, there is also eco tourism adventures at the Langkawi Geo Park. Take a ride up the tallest mountain here via a cable car or self-drive yourself around the island.

Langkawi is also accessible via flights as there is an international airport there while for those coming from Penang or the mainland, there are ferry services to the island. The most popular spot in Langkawi is at Pantai Cenang or Cenang Beach which is the main area. Kuah town is the capitol but this serves as a general town area. There are no beaches around the main town area too.

Penang - Pearl of the Orient, this bustling city with a UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town attracts all walks of life. Exploring the city on foot or bicycle is one of the main activities as there is much to see and experience here. Penang has one of the most complete heritage buildings in the entire Malaysia too. The street art is one of the main attractions while there are many small independent museums worth exploring in George Town area. A trip to Penang would not be complete if you do not try the local Penang hawker food which can be found all over the island. Chulia Street is one of the popular places for backpackers too.

While over in the Batu Feringgi area, there are beaches, parks and even theme parks available for everyone. There are numerous hotels and resorts located at Batu Feringgi while the famous Hard Rock Hotel and Cafe is also here. To get here, it is a 30 minute drive from George Town. Penang was also voted by Lonely Planet as the top destination in the world for food recently. Penang is accessible via flights and road. A flight from KL will take about 1 hour while overland, it will take 5 hours. Penang has two bridges connecting to the main land too.

Melaka - Another UNESCO World Heritage Site where Malaysia's colourful history began in the early 1500s. From the Portuguese, Dutch to English, each had their time for rule and this evolved into a multi-cultural crossroad  for the trading world. Now, the heritage zone houses well kept colonial buildings from hundreds of years ago including Dutch, Portuguese and British influences. Melaka is also best explored on foot so staying around the core heritage zone is a plus point. While here, don't forget to savor the local Baba and Peranakan cuisine plus the local Malacca hawker foods.

Around Melaka city, there are also some beautiful heritage hotels which are mostly in the boutique style. For a full Peranakan experience, it is recommended to stay at one of these hotels. Outside the city area, there are various parks and attractions which include the crocodile, deer and butterfly farm, a mini Malaysia park and also the well known Melaka zoo. This requires you to take public transport or a taxi as it is not accessible by foot. There are no airports to Melaka.

Johor - One of the new players in aggressive tourism as in the last few years, a number of tourist attractions have come up in Johor making this state one of the must-visit places in Malaysia. International attractions like Legoland Malaysia, Hello Kitty Town and the Red Box Entertainment Center of Puteri Harbor are a must if you are visiting with kids. There is also the Johor Premium Outlet or JPO which caters to shopping tourism and offers loads of discounts for all kinds of items here. Other notable places in Johor include Desaru, a coastal beach area which stretches for miles and also some Ecotourism activities at the local national parks here.Otherwise, Johor Baru is also the main gateway into Singapore with two causeways - one in the city of JB and one over at Senai. Johor has one airport at Senai while the main highway passes through the state.

A resort hidden in the lush greenery at Perhentian Island

Perhentian Island - Located about 45 minutes from the coast of Terengganu state, this is one of the most visited islands in Malaysia. Perhentian is divided into two main islands, Perhentian Besar (Big) and Perhentian Kecil (Small) which caters to all types of travelers. For the more active traveler, Perhentian Kecil is recommended while there are many types of resorts, hotels and guesthouses available here. Snorkeling and scuba diving in the crystal clear waters spotting turtles and sharks are among the highlights here.

Some of the resorts are also child-friendly like Bubbles Dive Resort on Perhentian Besar where you can bring toddlers of all ages. The resort owners have kids living there therefore they openly accept traveling parents with infants. Other resorts include long-stay types, luxurious types and also budget resorts. Quite a number of dive schools are available on both islands for those wanting to take their scuba diving licenses. Perhentian is only accessible via boats from the main land. There are no flights to the island. The off season is from October till March where it rains here during the monsoon season.

Royal Belum State Park - This is the newly crowned Ecotourism center for Malaysia in 2014 by the tourism minister of Malaysia at ITB Berlin 2014. This massive protected national park is home to many interesting flora and fauna found in Malaysia. Trekking, hiking, wildlife spotting are the main highlights at the Royal Belum Rainforest located in the state of Perak which borders Pahang.

Royal Belum State Park is recommended for those who love nature and the outdoors and is one of the latest eco tourism attractions in Malaysia. As the country has many national parks, this is the latest to be officially opened to the public. To get to Belum, one needs to engage a tour company.

The Batu Caves in Selangor, one of the most popular tourist spots

Selangor - The richest state in Malaysia where those entering the country will set foot here at the KLIA, LCCT or SkyPark Terminal Airports. Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory is actually in the middle of Selangor therefore there are many places like the Batu Caves, Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) and many of the theme parks and water parks. Selangor boasts of outdoors, food and shopping with a number of popular shopping malls like One Utama and The Curve.

Pay tribute to the ultimate Malaysian street food by getting down and dirty with some of the best burger stalls in town

Before the gourmet burger wave ever hit our shores, there was good old-fashioned cheap roadside burgers. Operating out of mobile vans, these stalls served up a greasy and messy mix of buttered buns, grilled patties, and sticky sauces that is quintessentially Malaysian.

Usually found in the late evenings to the early mornings, these street burgers make for an indulgent snack when food cravings come knocking in the middle of the night. Here are our top 10 picks of some of the juiciest and sloppiest burger bakars around!

Sempoi Burger @ Taman Desa

Shunning the more established brand of burger patties, this stall uses Oblong burger patties, which they claim to be thicker and juicier than the usual cutlet of choice. Their oblong lamb burger was bursting with flavour, with only a hint of gameyness. The meat was grilled with a dash of worcestershire sauce and dunked in brown sauce before being thrown together with a generous amount of mayonnaise and chilli sauce, giving a great big ‘wow’ factor to every messy bite. For Ramadan, the stall will only be selling roti john which we’ve never tried, but we’re pretty sure the awesome factor will come pretty close.

Jackson’s @ SS14

Jackson’s is less of a burger stall than it is an institution, having been in business for almost forty years and run by the same Chinese couple flipping patties today. It’s one of the few (if not only) roadside burger places that open in the day, catering to the lunch crowd. Their menu is simple: chicken, beef, fish and hot dogs, topped with crispy buttered buns. For those in the know, their crab burgers are excellent but best call to order as they run out quick.

Importing his burger-making skills from Australia, Abang Burn makes his burgers using homemade patties and douses them in a secret steak sauce mix (a testament to the owner’s fondness for steak). Yazid Burger @ Shah Alam

Found in the corner of a food court, Yazid isn’t your typical roadside burger stall. In fact, what they offer may not be the sloppy joes you’re used to. They sell only one type of burger but in three larger-than-life sizes; starting at 250g, middling at 500g and going way off the top at a whopping 1kg. You may dismiss it as gimmicky at first (heck, even we did!), but the burgers are good. Made with homemade buns and patties (it’s hard to get it processed in monster sizes), a healthy dose of black pepper sauce and cheese complemented the tender beef and sweet bread.

Located outside a 7-Eleven (as they usually are), A&Z Burger serves traditional Ramly burgers. The little van is almost always crowded with patrons looking for a fuss-free snack. Grab a drink from the convenience store or the stall itself and seat yourself while your burger is grilling away. A stone’s throw away from Nasi Lemak Bumbung and myBurgerLab, those who are still hungry can head over to A&Z Burger to top up on the calories!

The Burger Shop @ SS15 Subang

For all intents and purposes, the mobile van known as The Burger Shop is your regular ol’ Ramly stall. While they have the usual burger bakar menu (which they do very well), venture further down the menu and you’ll start seeing things like pita, nuggets, fishballs and even a foldover. A standout would be their mushroom burger – filled with generous helpings of mushrooms and sauce. Reasonably priced, we can see why The Burger Shop is so popular with its mix of classic burgers and novel creations.

For Ramadan, the store will be closing an hour earlier at 3.00am in the interest of observing the fast.

At Burger Bakar Kaw Kaw, you get to choose how high your burger gets by adding more and more patties (while your friends egg you on in the background, ‘How high can you go?’) Often thought of as the original burger bakar, their customisable burgers can be found in eight branches all over the Klang Valley. While they are known for their succulent beef patty, their juicy and crispy deep fried chicken patty is also one to look out for.

Burger Bobby Simpang Tiga @ Lembah Keramat

Bobby used to run his burger business right out of his own home but has recently shifted to a proper shop not too far away. The store can now accommodate more customers hungry to try good ol’ Ramly burgers and his many inventive variations (he even has one named after blogger Bangsar Babe). But the stall’s pièce de résistance has to be his tiesto (lamb) burger, a street take on the commercial ‘prosperity’ burger. A buttered bun sitting atop a mess of juicy patties, egg, lettuce and onions drenched in sauce, this hefty sandwich will be sure to satisfy.

The offerings here are simple; beef, chicken, mushroom and a mix. But that just means they make their burgers really well, right? A definite Yes! With homemade patties seasoned with more than ten spices, the burgers are bursting with flavour and juices (s-s-spicy). Especially popular are their beef burgers, made on a charcoal-fuelled grill.

OM Burger @ Ampang Jaya

Known as the greasiest and messiest burger around Ampang, Om Burger is not for the weak of heart. Watching the proprietors prepare your burger is already enough to make you feel like your cholesterol levels are rising and arteries clogging. Serving the usual suspects (chicken/daging special cheese and the like), the patties are fried in a pool of margarine before being further drenched in a mix of cheese, mayonnaise and chili sauce. It makes for sloppy eating as you try to hold it all together as you chomp down – perfect comfort food for those down days.

Bob Republic @ Bandar Menjalara

Wander into gourmet burger territory with Bob Republic’s latest branch in Menjalara. Run by friendly chaps, the stall offers a different kind of burger bakar experience with some Tex-Mex influences. With creative names like ‘V-tec,’ ‘Geisha,’ and ‘Republic Tower,’ their burgers are made with thick and tender homemade patties. Their showpiece would have to be ‘lovehatelove,’ a single patty beef burger topped with nachos and salsa between charcoal buns. While it could have done with a little more sauce, the nachos added texture and depth to the overall taste.
